Larry Harvey Snyder

August 24, 1962--January 3, 2022

Larry Harve Snyder, 59, Red Oak, passed away Monday, Jan. 3, 2022, at Good Samaritan Society – Red Oak.

Larry Snyder was born August 24, 1962, in Webster City, Iowa, the son of LaVerne and Helen (Snodgrass) Snyder. Larry was a 1980 graduate of the Iowa School for the Deaf. He eventually attended the National Technical Institute for the Deaf in Rochester, NY and earned a diploma in Optical Finishing Technologies in 1988.

Upon graduation, Larry moved to California. He lived in the Bay and Sacramento areas for more than 20 years.

After his father, LaVerne, died in 2009, Larry moved back to Red Oak in 2010 to live with and care for his mother, Helen. He was a loving son and provided the care she needed so she could live at home until the end of her life.

Born deaf, Larry never learned to lipread and preferred signing. Many of his hearing friends became proficient signers. He made friends easily because he was quick to smile and share his infectious laugh. He was always up for an adventure; Larry tried skydiving, water skiing, martial arts, and even attended a Ramones concert. As he aged, Larry enjoyed watching sports and movies with friends (closed captioned, of course).

For solitary pursuits, Larry enjoyed DIY and oversaw many upgrades to his home in Placerville, California. Once he moved back to Red Oak, Larry became a prolific painter and created hundreds of canvases in oil and charcoal. He experimented with clay and took up sketching near the end of his life. His family was supportive, but less enthused, with his experiments in cooking.

Larry faced many challenges throughout his life – multiple hip surgeries, mental illness, and ultimately rectal cancer. He met each challenge with patience, humor, and grace. The family thanks the many certified sign language interpreters, medical professionals, and friends who supported and assisted him on his journey.

Survivors include his brother, Roy (Ann) Snyder of Clive; sister-in-law, Lorene Snyder of Clinton; two nephews, David Snyder of Carroll and Jonathan Snyder of Ankeny; and niece Aubrey Snyder of St. Paul, Minn.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents. His brother, Ross, preceded Larry in death by two months.

There will be no services for Larry. The body will be cremated and inurnment will be at the cemetery in Blairsburg, Iowa alongside his parents’ ashes.

Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel of Red Oak was in charge of arrangements.
