Joe "Buddy" Schmitz

September 24, 1939 – April 5, 2016

Joe “Buddy” Schmitz, 76, of Santa Rosa, California passed away on April 5, 2016.

He was born at Nebraska City, Nebraska.  He attended Nebraska School for the Deaf in 1943 and he graduated from the school in 1958.  He attended Gallaudet College (now University) and graduated in 1963.  He eventually married Carolyn Skedsmo, California product.  They have two children…one boy and one daughter.  He taught in different programs for the deaf children in California.  He eventually became an American Sign Language instructor at Santa Rosa Community College, Santa Rosa, California.  He enjoyed teaching American Sign Language to hearing college students and he used stories from his childhood to entertain and expand students’ understanding of ASL.  He also authored a book titling “The Adventures of Buddy Schmitz.”

He is survived by his wife, son, daughter and three grandchildren. 

His body was cremated.  His family will place an urn burial at Nebraska City, Nebraska later this summer
