Ella Mae (Meyer) McNeely

November 3, 1943—February 13, 2021

Ella Mae McNeely, age 77 of Mason City, died on Saturday, February 13, 2021 at her home in Mason City.

A private family burial took place on Friday, February 19, 2021 at West Prairie Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Leland, Iowa.

A memorial service is tentatively being planned for this summer.

Schott Funeral Homes, 505 N. Clark St. in Forest City is assisting the family.

Ella Mae (Meyer) McNeely was born on November 3, 1943 to parents David Sr. and Anna Meyer. She attended the Iowa School for the Deaf in Council Bluffs, Iowa, graduating when she was 16 years old. Ella went on to obtain an associate’s degree in accounting. She was active in the deaf club when she was younger.

Ella had been united in marriage to Dennis Murphy, and this union gave them two children: a daughter Shanna and a son Lester. Their marriage later dissolved. Years after, Ella married Leo Strickland, adding a step-daughter Beth to the family.

Through the years Ella worked various jobs. She was a hard worker and was definitely a master of all trades. Her feisty (and sometimes stubborn) personality was a trademark, and her family loved her dearly. Things that brought Ella joy, other than her family, were card games (especially Skip-Bo), Yahtzee, Lifetime movies, and the Wheel of Fortune. Ella adored her cat Smokey.

Those thankful for Ella’s life are her children Shanna Murphy and Lester Murphy, both of Mason City, IA; four grandchildren, Stephanie Torres, Jennifer Torres and Mark Torres, Sr. all of Mason City, and Adam (Jaimee) Murphy of Waterloo, IA; and three beautiful great-grandchildren Mark Torres, Jr., Abel Torres and Ava Anderson. She is also survived by a beloved niece and caretaker DeeDee Mead along with her children Marcus, Dominic & Avery; and a sister Donna (Meyer) Herndon of Des Moines, IA and her children Tabatha, Brandy & Rachel.

Ella was preceded in death by her parents David Sr. and Anna Meyer; siblings Shirley Dagget, David Meyer, Jr. and Phyllis Hohenfield; and a step-daughter Beth Strickland.
